What to do in Santiago in September

Many pilgrims and regular travellers call it the best month: settled weather and the summer crowds already thinning.

September has no big fixed date on the calendar, and that is exactly why many pilgrims and regular travellers consider it the best month of the year to come: the weather stays settled, around 16-21 °C, and the summer crush starts to drop away sharply.

For the city it is a breather — you can finally eat in the centre without half an hour's wait — but not for the Camino: September is the busiest month of the year for pilgrims (81,533 Compostelas in 2025, more than August), so in the hostels of the final stretch you need to book just as you would in high summer, with the advantage of the cool. Make the most of it before the autumn rains set in properly.

Things to do in September

  • Walk the Camino with the year's best balance of weather and crowds
  • Wander the old town in the golden light of late summer
  • Restaurants in the centre have tables again without the long wait
  • Make the most of it before the autumn rainy season starts in earnest

September is also one of the recommended months to walk the Camino de Santiago: a good balance between weather and how many pilgrims are on the road.
