What to do in Santiago in February

Still properly winter, but the odd day of clear sun starts to break through.

February is still settled into the Galician winter, though the odd day of frank sunshine now slips in between the usual damp. The big date is Entroido, the Galician carnival, with troupes and costumes through the old town and lacón con grelos as the compulsory dish in the casas de comidas of the centre. One thing worth knowing: its dates move every year with the liturgical calendar, so confirm them before you build a trip around them.

With temperatures around 8-12 °C and rainfall still high, this remains a month for indoor plans: the Museo do Pobo Galego, the CGAC, or any cider house with the heating on. It is also a good moment to book for spring, before Holy Week pushes the prices up.

What happens in February

Entroido (carnival) (Variable, set by the liturgical calendar). Troupes, costumes and the Entroido meals in the bars of the centre, with lacón con grelos as the flagship dish.

Things to do in February

  • Eat lacón con grelos, the dish that marks Entroido, in any casa de comidas
  • Watch the carnival troupes come through the old town
  • Take shelter in the Museo do Pobo Galego or the CGAC if the day turns raw
  • Start planning the spring trip: this is the best moment to book before Holy Week
