Camino de Santiago tour packages: prices compared, and what they include

Search for Camino tours and every result is an operator comparing itself with nobody. Here are seven self-guided packages from Sarria, four from Tui and five guided trips, with the price each one publishes on its own site, what's in and what's out, and what the same week costs if you book it yourself.

A Camino tour package is an operator booking your bed at the end of each stage and, if you pay for it, moving your bag from one to the next. The usual version is self-guided: you walk on your own dates, alone or with whoever you came with, and the company makes sure there is a room and your luggage waiting. A guided tour leaves on fixed dates with a group, a guide and often a support van. For the most popular week, Sarria to Santiago in five stages and six nights, self-guided prices run from €190 in private hostels to €420–€730 with a private room; guided trips from €359 to over €4,000. These are the "from" prices each operator published on 26 October 2026: indicative, and almost always without dinners.

When is it worth it? When you want an en-suite room every night and don't want to spend July evenings messaging guesthouses in Spanish. If a bunk is fine, you're paying for something our free planner and a WhatsApp message can do, and the numbers are further down.

Self-guided or guided?

Self-guided is what most people mean by a Camino tour. You start any day, you walk at your pace, and on the trail you're a pilgrim like any other: the other walkers won't know or care how you booked. The operator's job ends at the door of each room, plus a phone number for when something goes wrong.

Guided means a group of strangers on set dates, a guide who walks with you, and usually dinners together. It suits people travelling alone who want company from day one, or who want history and context along the way. The trade-off is the fixed pace and that the trip depends on enough people signing up: CaminoWays needs six, and Follow the Camino turns its guided week into a self-guided one, refunding the guide's share, if the minimum isn't met.

What a package includes, and what it doesn't

The listings look alike from a distance and differ in three lines: whether breakfast is in, whether the luggage transfer is in, and whether insurance is in. Check those three before comparing two prices.

One thing no operator can sell you: the Compostela. The Pilgrim Office issues it to anyone who walks at least 100 continuous kilometres on one route ending at the Cathedral, with a stamped credential, however the trip was booked; the rules are in the Compostela certificate.

Sarria to Santiago: seven operators, one week

Every one of these sells the same route: a night in Sarria, five walking days through Portomarín, Palas de Rei, Arzúa (or Melide) and O Pedrouzo, and a night in Santiago. Sorted by published price. None of them pays us to appear or per click, and the order is not a recommendation: it's the price.

Macs Adventure7 days, 6 nights$935 on the US site (page doesn't say if per person)6 nights in small rural hotels and hostales, all en-suite, 6 breakfasts, luggage transfer, info pack, emergency support. Insurance and local taxes excluded

Three things stand out once they sit side by side. First, with a private room the realistic range is €420 to €730, and the cheapest headline is not always the cheapest trip: Pilgrim's €475 becomes €555 once you add breakfasts and luggage, while Santiago Ways and Macs already include both. Second, no operator in the table shows a single supplement on the page we read: Macs mentions one without an amount, Santiago Ways says "possible supplement". Solo walkers should get a quote before falling for a price built for two. Third, the same company can charge differently depending on which language you read its site in: Santiago Ways asks €697 on the English page and €589 on the Spanish page for the same trip.

Tui to Santiago: the Portuguese Way packages

Tui is the Portuguese Way's equivalent of Sarria: the border town on the Minho, a little about 116 km out, with its own stage-by-stage guide. Packages cost a bit more than from Sarria and several sell it as a seven-night trip.

Guided Camino tours: the prices

The gap here is not just margin. The cheapest is a Spanish-language group with a leader and a van and no dinners listed; the international ones add an English-speaking or bilingual guide and group dinners, and Marly Camino's package starts in Madrid and adds transfers, a Finisterre day and most meals.

What the same week costs on your own

A fair comparison matches like with like. Packages rarely include meals; what they sell is the bed, the booking and sometimes the bag. Using prices this site already publishes, per person, for the same six nights:

Sarria–Santiago in six nights on your own, per person (indicative prices)
Where you sleepBeds, 6 nightsWith luggage transferSource
Xunta public albergues€60Doesn't fit well: the public network takes no bookings€10 a night, no bookings
Private albergues€84–€150€114–€180€14–€25 a bunk
Guesthouse or rural house, sharing a double€105–€210€135–€240€35–€70 a room

The luggage figure is Pilbeo's published price, €30 for the whole Sarria–Santiago run; other companies charge around €5–€7 a stage, as we explain in luggage transfer on the Camino. For the full daily spend, food included, the median in our own survey of pilgrims is €50 a day (38 reported daily costs, from €25 to €133), so about €300 for six days; the detail is in how much the Camino costs.

Put simply: with a private room, a package costs two to four times what the same beds cost if you book them yourself. A couple paying Pilgrim's €475 each, plus breakfasts and luggage, spends about €1,100 on six nights; the same six nights in guesthouses booked directly come to €210–€420 per room, plus €60 for two bags. The difference buys time, a guaranteed bed in high season, and someone to call. If you're worried about the beds running out, read where pilgrims actually run out of beds before deciding.

The free alternative: plan it and book it yourself

What an operator really does is decide where each day ends. Our Camino planner does that too, with real distances and the albergues at each stop, and has the most requested splits ready: Sarria in 5 stages, 6 or 7, and from Tui in 5, 7 or 8 stages. With the split in hand, beds are booked as described in how to book albergues, the luggage transfer is arranged the evening before, and the train or bus to the start is in getting to the start.

Before you pay a deposit

  • Ask for the names of the hotels. CaminoWays notes that its superior and country-house rooms can be off the route with a transfer, and that in busy weeks it may book two nights in one town and drive you: fine, as long as you know.
  • Ask whether the price is per person. Four of the seven Sarria pages don't say.
  • Add breakfast, luggage and insurance before comparing: that's where €100–€150 of difference hides.
  • Check the currency and the city tax. Macs quotes in dollars on its US site; CaminoWays lists Santiago's city tax as not included.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Camino de Santiago tour package cost?

Checked on seven operators' websites on 26 October 2026: a self-guided Sarria–Santiago package of five stages and six nights starts at €190 in private hostels and €420 to €730 with a private room. From Tui, €485 to €856. Guided group trips run from €359 to €4,450. These are 'from' prices, usually without dinners or the trip to the start.

What is the difference between a self-guided and a guided Camino?

On a self-guided Camino the operator books your rooms and usually your luggage transfer, and you walk alone on your own dates with a 24/7 phone line. On a guided Camino you join a group on fixed dates with a guide who walks with you, usually with group dinners; with the same operator it costs about 1.5 to 2 times as much, and it depends on a minimum number of people signing up.

Is it cheaper to walk the Camino from Sarria without a tour?

Yes. Six nights in the €10 Xunta public albergues cost €60; guesthouse rooms shared by two cost €105 to €210 per person, plus about €30 for luggage transfer. A package with private rooms costs €420 to €730 per person, so the premium pays for the bookings, support and insurance.

Do you get the Compostela on an organised tour?

Yes, on the same terms as anyone else: the Pilgrim Office issues it to those who walk at least 100 continuous kilometres on one route, ending at the Cathedral, with a stamped credential. Sarria is about 114 km out and Tui about 116 km. Most operators send you the credential, but they don't issue the certificate.
