Cathedrals Beach (As Catedrais) from Santiago: day trip
It's near Ribadeo on the Lugo coast, a little over two hours' drive away. You can only walk the sand at low tide, and at Easter and from July to September you need a free permit from the Galician government. It doesn't work as a day trip on public transport.

As Catedrais — Praia das Catedrais in Galician, Playa de las Catedrales in Spanish, Playa de Aguas Santas on some maps, and Cathedral Beach or Cathedrals Beach in English — is a beach near Ribadeo where the sea has carved arches and vaults into the cliff. From Santiago it's the longest of the day trips from Santiago we cover, and the only one where you don't set the schedule: the tide does. This page answers the four questions that decide whether it fits your trip: how long it takes, whether you can do it without a car, what permit you need, and when to go down to the sand.
By car: 184 km and just over two hours
From central Santiago to the beach is about 184 km and 2h10 without traffic, according to the OpenStreetMap router (OSRM), checked on 26 October 2026 against the location the Galician government gives on its booking site. Its route runs along the AP-9, A-6 and A-8. That's over four hours at the wheel there and back, so it takes the whole day: leave early if low tide falls mid-morning, and don't try to squeeze another trip into the same day.
The regional government says there are three car parks serving the beach, the farthest less than a kilometre from the entrance. If you don't have a car, renting one in town or at the airport is the way to do this trip on your own.
By public transport: not as a day trip
There's no direct bus from Santiago to Ribadeo. The Galician government's public transport planner (bus.gal), checked for Wednesday 28 October 2026, offers six connections, all with a change, and even the first gets in too late for a day trip. These are the morning and early-afternoon ones, with the three returns:
| Direction | Departs | Arrives | Change at |
|---|---|---|---|
| Santiago → Ribadeo | 11:00 | 15:20 | Lugo |
| Santiago → Ribadeo | 12:45 | 17:20 | Lugo |
| Santiago → Ribadeo | 13:45 | 17:20 | Lugo |
| Santiago → Ribadeo | 14:30 | 18:48 | Foz |
| Ribadeo → Santiago | 06:45 | 11:04 | Lugo |
| Ribadeo → Santiago | 13:00 | 18:00 | Burela (on-demand leg) |
| Ribadeo → Santiago | 18:00 | 22:04 | Lugo |
Arriving at 15:20 with the last bus back at 18:00 leaves you two hours and forty minutes in Ribadeo, and the beach isn't in town: you still have to get out to it and back, and hit low tide. The regional network does list a «Praia das Catedrais» stop, but on 28 October no bus ran to it from Ribadeo bus station, and the summer 2027 timetables aren't loaded yet. Bottom line: without a car, take a tour or spend a night in Ribadeo. Other routes out of town are in leaving Santiago.
The Xunta permit: when you need it and how to get it
The official booking site, ascatedrais.xunta.gal (it has an English version), says it on the front page: a reservation is needed only during Holy Week (Easter) and from 1 July to 30 September, and both the permit and the guided visits are free. Outside those dates access is open, though the visiting rules still apply. What the government's own FAQ adds (a PDF on the same site, read on 26 October 2026):
- You can book up to 30 days ahead; before that the site won't let you.
- One person can request permits for a group of up to 25, giving each person's full name, sex, year of birth and identity document (no document needed for under-14s).
- A permit is valid only for that day and the person named on it: you can't move it or pass it on.
- There's a permanent check at the entrance to the sand, and staff can ask to see your permit at any time.
- The Xunta also runs free guided visits with official guides, for groups of up to 25, requested together with the permit. They don't replace the reservation, and if you didn't request one, the guide on site can tell you which slots still have room.
In 2027, Holy Week runs from Palm Sunday, 21 March, to Easter Sunday, 28 March. The exact window in which the Xunta requires a booking is set on its site; check there before assuming you can walk in on the days around it. Questions go to informacion-ascatedrais@xunta.gal.
Tides: when to go down to the sand
This matters more than the permit. The Xunta warns that at high tide the sea covers the whole beach for several hours, and recommends going down between two hours before and two hours after low tide. Turn up at the wrong time and you'll see the arches from the clifftop, with the sea inside them.
Where to check low tide:
- On the booking site itself: when you pick a date it shows that day's tide times. In high season, that's the source to use.
- On MeteoGalicia, the Galician government's weather service (meteogalicia.gal, tides section): the closest port it publishes is Ría de Foz, on the same stretch of coast. For example, for 26 October 2026 it gave low tide at 09:53 and 22:13.
Low tide gets later from one day to the next: in the guided-visit timetable the Xunta published for 2025 it moves by between half an hour and an hour a day, so a time you saw for another date is no use. On some days the only daylight low tide falls first thing in the morning or late in the afternoon; with two hours' drive from Santiago, those days change the plan.
Guided day trip from Santiago
Without a car, this is the realistic option. Civitatis sells a departure from Santiago, meeting at the Capilla del Pilar, from €65 (price read on 26 October 2026), with three versions: Lugo, the beach and Ribadeo (11 hours); the same plus Illa Pancha and its lighthouse (12 hours); or the beach, Tapia de Casariego in Asturias, Illa Pancha and Lugo (10h30). It includes the coach, the guide and beach entry: the operator handles the Xunta permit, which is why it asks for each traveller's ID number and date of birth when you book. Lunch isn't included, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before. The English listing advertises an English-speaking guide, the Spanish one says Spanish, sometimes bilingual, so confirm the language when you book.
The listing doesn't publish departure days: they show up in the booking calendar. It isn't summer-only, judging by the reviews on the listing itself, several dated October 2026. The version that crosses into Asturias has its own listing, As Catedrais Beach, Lugo and Asturias coast, also from €65, and it warns of something that applies to any tour here: because it depends on the tide, they confirm the exact departure time 24 to 48 hours beforehand, always in the morning.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Cathedrals Beach from Santiago de Compostela?
About 184 km, a little over two hours each way by car without traffic, via the AP-9, A-6 and A-8 (OSRM, October 2026). There's no direct bus: with a change, it takes between 3h35 and just over 5 hours to Ribadeo depending on the connection, and the beach is outside town.
Do you need a permit to visit Cathedrals Beach?
Only during Holy Week (Easter) and from 1 July to 30 September, according to the official Xunta site, ascatedrais.xunta.gal. The permit is free, can be booked up to 30 days ahead, is valid for one day and one named person, and is checked at the entrance to the sand. The rest of the year access is open.
What time should I go?
At low tide: the Xunta recommends going down to the sand between two hours before and two hours after low tide, because at high tide the sea covers the whole beach. Low tide times appear on the booking site when you pick a date, and on MeteoGalicia (Ría de Foz port).
Can I do it as a day trip without a car?
Not realistically on your own: the first bus from Santiago reaches Ribadeo at 15:20 and the last one back leaves at 18:00. The practical options are a guided tour (from €65 with Civitatis, permit included) or a night in Ribadeo.
How much does it cost to visit?
Nothing. The Xunta permit and its guided visits are free. What you pay for, if you don't drive, is the tour: from €65 per person on Civitatis in October 2026.
