The old town, where you will spend most of your time, fits inside a rectangle less than a kilometre across, with the **Cathedral** and its four squares at the geometric and sentimental centre of everything. From **Praza do Obradoiro** you can walk to almost anything worth seeing in ten minutes. To the south is the **Intermodal station**, which has put train and coach under one roof since 2025. It is a 10 to 15 minute walk from the centre, so most people do not need a taxi from there. See [getting to Santiago by train, bus or car](https://santiago.es/en/getting-there) if you are coming from outside Galicia. **Santiago airport (SCQ)**, in Lavacolla, is further out: 12 km east, with a city bus and taxis that reach the centre in 20 to 50 minutes depending on which you take. If you are arriving on foot along the **Camino Francés**, **Monte do Gozo** is the symbolic end: that is where the Cathedral towers come into view for the first time, some 4 to 5 km from the Obradoiro. And the monumental building you can see on a hill to the east is the **Cidade da Cultura**, Peter Eisenman's complex on Monte Gaiás, a fair way out of the centre but well signposted. You do not need transport inside the old town: most of it is pedestrianised and the hills are gentle. Cars, in fact, have very restricted access, so read [how to get around the city](https://santiago.es/en/getting-around) before bringing one. The reference car park next to the centre is **Xoán XXIII**, also marked on the map. ## The old town: what fits inside it, and how long it takes If all you want is the old town, the map shrinks a lot. The old quarter runs from **Porta do Camiño**, where pilgrims come in, to **Praza do Obradoiro**, and that is **about 900 metres in a straight line**: fifteen minutes without stopping, and considerably more if you stop, which is what normally happens. Everything the guidebooks list fits inside that. Real distances, measured from the Obradoiro: the [Cathedral](https://santiago.es/en/what-to-see/cathedral) is the square itself; **Praza da Quintana** and the Holy Door are on the other side of the building, two minutes around it; the [Mercado de Abastos](https://santiago.es/en/where-to-eat), seven minutes downhill; the **Alameda** and the mirador da Ferradura, five minutes uphill; and the [Pilgrim's Reception Office](https://santiago.es/en/camino-de-santiago/compostela-certificate), on Rúa das Carretas, three minutes. None of these distances justifies a taxi. Outside the old town there are only three things you will actually need, and all three are on the map: the Intermodal station to the south, the Xoán XXIII car park to the north and the airport, 12 km out. The rest of the modern centre, the Ensanche, is housing and shops, useful for sleeping more cheaply but not for sightseeing. ## The two kinds of marker The **gold markers** are for orientation: the Cathedral, the squares, the stations, the airport. The **smaller green dots** are individual places we have checked, such as restaurants, albergues and hotels. Thirteen of the fifteen appear: the other two have no dot because we could not confirm their exact coordinates, and we would rather leave them off than place them by eye. One thing worth saying plainly: the individual place listings behind the green dots are only written in Spanish for now, so in English they show the type, the price and the district without a link through.
