# Tui → O Porriño

Stage 1 of 6

16.1 flat kilometres from the last Spanish city before Portugal — 18.1 if you measure like the Xunta — with a riverside variant that saves you the worst stretch of the whole Camino Portugués.

It is the first stage and the flattest of the whole Camino Portugués from Tui: no passes or ramps to remember, just the natural nerves of new boots — and the very real first-day risk of the first [blisters](https://santiago.es/en/camino-de-santiago/blisters). The exact distance depends who you ask: gronze.com puts it at **16.1 km** and the Xunta, which runs the public hostel network, gives 18.1. We use the first throughout the guide so all six stages add up on the same basis — 116 km to Santiago; on the ground the difference is barely noticeable and comes down to small route variants within O Porriño.

## The route, village by village

You leave from the upper part of Tui, beside the fortress-cathedral of Santa María, and drop towards the river. The route passes **Ponte das Febres**(7.7 km), a plain bridge with no services where it pays to have water on you, and continues through Ribadelouro and Orbenlle, with a bar and the stage's first important fork. From there it carries on to As Gándaras de Budiño, already in the O Porriño district.

Take the river Louro variant

Since 2013 there has been a **waymarked riverside variant**that follows the river Louro and completely avoids the O Porriño industrial estate — the largest in Galicia — which gronze.com describes bluntly as "possibly the worst stretch of the whole Camino Portugués": tarmac, warehouses and heavy traffic. The river variant is well signed from Orbenlle and adds only a few minutes: take it without hesitating.

The entrance to O Porriño, whether by the classic route or the riverside variant, comes through the town centre, with the Bridge of the Five Women and the Praza do Cristo Rei as landmarks before reaching the middle of town.

## Tui, before you set out

Tui is worth an afternoon before you start: the **fortress-cathedral of Santa María** (12th-13th century), with battlemented towers that recall its role as a frontier stronghold, and the **International Bridge** over the Miño, built in 1878 by a pupil of Gustave Eiffel and today crossable without any checks thanks to the Schengen area.

## Where to sleep in O Porriño

The **Xunta** hostel is on Avenida de Buenos Aires, at the usual 10 € rate and with about 50 beds. It comes with an important catch: it gives priority to those arriving on foot from Portugal, so if you set out from Tui and arrive late you may [find no bed left](https://santiago.es/en/camino-de-santiago/beds). Among the private ones: **Rincón del Peregrino** from 15 €, **Senda Sur** from 17 €, **Alojamiento Camino Portugués** at around 17-18 € and **Casucho da Peregrina**, about 26 € with breakfast.
